Source Selections Draft

**I would like to say upfront that I had a bunch of info on my computer and somehow the file is missing!! I had to go back through my assignments and do some more searching online so I know this assignment isn't done to the best of my abilities, and I apologize for that! I know it is a bit all over the place and hard to read, I did a bit of panicking and just had to throw stuff together.**

Research Process

How is children’s health affected when there is a lack of affordable health care due to living in poverty?

When families are living in poverty, there is usually a lack of affordable heath care for the children, and because of this their health is affected. Many common childhood illnesses become very serious when the living conditions are not suitable and medical attention can not be received due to lack of funds to pay. It is something that affects children worldwide, but I will be dealing with the poverty and health care issues of the United States.

Important databases and other periodical indexes

The most important databases and periodical indexes in my search are ProQuest, and Google U.S. Government. I haven’t had much luck with the Library of Congress catalog, but I am thinking it’s because of not looking enough. Every time I do a search I seem to find very good results when I use the worlds “children’s health” and “poverty”. I usually get some good sources that relate very well to my topic.

By this time in the “game” I should have it all figured out, but unfortunately I don’t, and it’s really getting down to the wire, and I am really starting to panic. I still am not sure about the Library of congress subject headings, but I AM sure I can figure it out and get it right.

My topic can be a bit tricky to narrow down, and if I’m not careful I end up with thousands of results and then get really swamped trying to sort through them and narrow my results even more. Finding information on children in poverty and health problems due to the lack of health insurance for children is really easy, some of it ends up being fairly old, and some of it is from other countries. I think I would have been better off researching diseases of children in Africa or something similar.

Finding information on ProQuest has been a breeze, there are tons of newspapers and journals dealing with my topic, the only real problem I’ve been having is finding information that isn’t based on politics. Not that I should leave that out, but I have found what seems to be great info, and it ends up being some kind of smear campaign and not very reliable.

Week 7

Well here we are at the end of Week 7, and I am still shocked at just how fast it went by. The assignments this week were really interesting. I had fun with the search assignments, and I learned quite a bit. I've always had a hard time finding things online, so they really opened my eyes about different ways and different search engines.

At the moment I am still working on my last assignment, Evaluating Websites. I plan on getting it done soon, and have been working on it a lot today, I just keep getting interrupted! It doesn't help that my husband and I are looking for a house, our first house that is, so between that, the kids and homework it is just taking forever to write my review and anotations.

I think overall I'm doing good in class, I know that my confidence is going up, so my assignments are seeming quite as scary anymore. There is still a little confusion, but nothing like there has been the last few weeks!

Ok, well back to my evaluations! and then on to Week 8 (geez, I can't believe it's week 8 already!!!)

Revised Title and Topic Focus

Title
Poverty and its Impact on Children's Health

Topic Focus
How is children's health affected when there is a lack of affordable health care due to living in poverty?

Week 6

Well I think I'm finally "getting" the assignments. I know that I probably shouldn't still be a little "fuzzy" on my topic at this stage, and really I'm not, it's just I can't seem to get the words to go from my head to the keyboard! I have decided to change my topic a little bit, and I think (ok, I HOPE) that it will give me a narrower search area, and more focused information.

I have to say, I put more effort into this weeks assignments, not that I didn't try in the weeks before, but something finally clicked in my head and I am actually understanding it more. Not just about the Pathfinder, but citations and annotations and researching in general. I still have a little problem with the annotations, but I'm working on it.

It seems like every Wednesday I am all stressed out, trying my hardest to make sure all my assignments from all of my classes are done and on time, and then when i wake up Thursday, it's like someone opened the door and let all the stress out of the room! I feel refreshed and ready to work. Well, I need to finish up my other assignments and then try to get to bed before midnight, so on to week 7!

Revised Research Plan

I have decided to change my topic, not a big change, I will still be using the same type of information, but I'm refocusing my topic to a specific area of children's health due to poverty.

Title
Poverties affects on children due to the lack of affordable health care. (please let me know if this is ok, or if I need to reword it, I'm afraid it's still too broad. Should I maybe change children to families? )

Topic Focus
Children's health, and well being (I'm a little lost on this part, should I still focus it on children's health or the overall outlook on their lives?)

Scope
I would like to look at how the lack of affordable health care affects children (or families) that live in poverty, how it will affect their health and well being.

Academic Disciplines
Psychology, Sociology, Health

Key Terms
Poverty, health care, children's health

Nature of Topic
I think a better way for me to go, instead of just poverty and its affects on children's health, is to look at a specific area like the lack of health care for families that don't have much, and how it affects their lives. I think it would be pretty straightforward if I looked at the problem with health care for children in poverty.

Week 5

Well this week has been rough, it seems like everytime I tried to do anything, something would happen and I'd be taken farther away from my homework. The kids have been sick, I've been sick, and my computer has been sick!

Ok, now about this weeks homework, annotating and citing is not my cup o' tea, I think I'm doing it right, but then I realize i'm not!

I have been putting my whole self into my assignments and it just doesn't seem to be going anywhere, I don't know if it's cause I don't understand things, or if I'm just too stressed, but like I've said many times now, I really need to work harder and ask more questions when I'm stuck!

I am also having a hard time narrowing my topic down more, I know the general direction I am going with it, but I'm just lost as to what to do...I've had suggestions but I'm just stuck! And that is really irratating, it's like when you have something on the tip of your tongue, but you just can't get it out!
